3 Reasons To Ditch Aluminium Pods

(that nobody talks about)

You've got a Nespresso® machine.

You've got a Nespresso® machine.

And you also use their pods.

Beyond recycling them, you might’ve considered a more sustainable alternative.

Something like those compostable coffee pods.

But green-washing on the rise, as a consumer, it's hard to know what's marketing hype and what's truth.

That's why we've put together this simple comparison table.

That's why we've put together this simple comparison table.

Three ways compostable pods fundamentally differ from aluminium, and what it means for you.

Check it out...

1. Made out of renewable resources

The capsule itself is a bio-based polymer derived from renewable and sustainable sources, like corn and potato starch.

1. Made out of non-renewable resources (fossil fuels)

The production of aluminium relies on limited resources like coal and gas. It's estimated that fossil fuels will run out in our lifetime by 2088

2. No toxic waste when composted

Like all organic materials, decomposition leaves a nutrient rich humus. Nutrients are returned back to the soil with no toxic residue.

2. Toxic waste when recycled

Each tonne of recycled aluminium produces up to 500kg of waste (aluminium impurities). This is highly toxic and is often incorrectly disposed.

3. Lower CO2 emissions

Approx. 3.8 tonnes of CO2 produced per tonne of bioplastic, 75% less than aluminium.

3. Higher CO2 emissions

Approx. 15.6 tonnes of CO2 produced per tonne of aluminium, 4.1x more than bioplastics.

Recycling isn't always possible, production is using our finite fossil fuels and toxic waste is left-over.

In Australia, we have commercial composting facilities but they're not readily available to you (the consumer).

Sustainably-made, we need them sustainably disposed of as well.

So... what's the answer?

How can we get more local councils to compost bioplastics?

When plastic bottles and aluminium cans were introduced, they weren’t recycled either.

Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) has already committed up to $35 million for a new facility in Melbourne.

Composting facilities are progressing and fast.

Whilst sometimes you can’t have all the answers as a consumer, you can always make better decisions.

So, with that said, let’s make sustainable products a thing.

Let's give councils the commercial incentive to develop more composting facilities.

Because now, finally, there’s is a solution that allows you to enjoy your coffee pods without costing the Earth.

Literally.
